Too Much Intervention Endangers Birth
More cesarean births and more induced labor leads to more deaths -- so why is the U.S. moving away from healthier, natural timetables? Why do we have more premature babies and more dying moms than we did in 2002?
An excellent article in the Los Angeles Times exams the cost of excess medical intervention. Reporter Lisa Girion's research shows "the intensive and expensive U.S. brand of medicine has failed to deliver better results and may, in fact, be doing more harm than good" when it comes to childbirth, especially.
Why? Some cite the trend toward parents seeking scheduled births, inspired by busy schedules, celebrity C-sections as well as a general reluctance to let babies control their own arrival. What's even scarier? Hospitals bill almost twice as much money for cesareans, so there's no incentive for them to cut down on the cutting.
